CBS At Home Learning Plan

As promised, I write to you today with updated information and guidance regarding the at-home learning plan for Christian Brothers School.  Before getting into the details of the plan, I offer words of reassurance.  Know that we understand that this extraordinary time is stressful.  We are seeking to do the best we can to sustain the educational program without becoming a burden or an additional source of stress for your family.  If managing the CBS online instructional program becomes impossible or overwhelming for your child or family, please reach out to us so that we can help.  We are committed to the partnership with your family and the personal relationships we enjoy via the CBS educational experience.  The at-home learning plan consists of delivery of instruction, contact with teachers, and assessment of learning.

The launching point for online instruction for grades 1-7 is CANVAS.  Specifically, go to “Announcements” on the CANVAS page for each class to receive initial direction.  We have asked each teacher to post an introductory announcement on Monday, March 16 as online instruction will begin on Tuesday, March 17.  The launching point for online instruction in Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten will be through the school email address.

Daily lessons are to be posted by the classroom teacher no later than 8:00 am on the day of instruction.  In addition, we appreciate the real concern that working parents as well as parents of multiple children have with the amount of time it will take for students/families to consume the instruction and to complete assignments.  With that, we have offered the following guidelines for daily instruction:

  • Grades 5-7: Approximately 20 minutes per class (inclusive of instruction and practice) for a total of approximately 2 hours (or a little more) per day.

  • Grades 3-4: A total of approximately 1.5 hours per day.

  • Grades PK(4)-2: A total of approximately 1 hour per day (a little more for 2nd grade and a little less for Pre-Kindergarten).

  • Teachers of co-curricular classes such as PE, art, music, etc. will post optional lessons on CANVAS as well.  Parents who may be looking to keep their children engaged after the completion of the core coursework may find this additional content helpful/useful.

The key to successful online instruction is communication between teacher and student/parent.  Minimally, we expect teachers to check email twice per school day (once before noon and once after noon).  In addition, each teacher will have regularly scheduled “office hours” during which the teacher will be accessible for live contact.  That live contact may be in the form of a video conference/chat or a discussion group.  It is recommended that a parent be present (physically or digitally) to monitor such interaction.  The teacher has been asked to communicate his/her preferred method of contact via CANVAS Announcements.  Here is the” office hours” schedule (most of which can be found on the school website) for all of our classes:

Assessments for mastery of subject matter will continue to be given during our separation.  The guidelines for assessments are as follows:

  • Reviews for assessments are expected just as they are during regular school instruction.

  • Individual assessments should not take more than approximately 30 minutes on a given day.

  • Assessments may be split over more than one day.

  • Students will be given a 24-hour deadline to complete the assessment.

  • Students may make requests for deadline extensions if necessary.  Contact the teacher directly to make such requests.

Here are a few more relevant announcements for this time of school closure.

  • Teachers will be meeting weekly with administrators and with one another to evaluate the at-home learning plan.  Accordingly, any amendments to the plan will be shared in upcoming emails from me.

  • Office hours during our separation have been modified to Monday through Friday from 9:00-11:00.

  • Third quarter report cards and any earned honor roll certificates will be mailed in the upcoming days.

  • The annual March mailing with information related to preparing for the start of the 2020-2021 school year will be mailed in the upcoming days.

  • Families who financed tuition for this school year and who may be challenged to meet the demands of the monthly tuition payment should contact First Bank and Trust directly for any possible alternate arrangements.

Should you have any questions or concerns before receiving my next email, feel free to contact me or your campus principal via email or by phone during modified office hours.  All three of us will be checking email numerous times per day and in the office during the modified hours.  Meanwhile, we ask for your cooperation with government and medical officials regarding your individual responsibility as it relates to combating/minimizing the spread of this novel Coronavirus in our community.  To that end, our counselors remain ready to assist any family struggling with the anxiety of our current reality.  Do not hesitate to contact Gina Roussel (Canal Street) at groussel@cbs-no.org  or Susan Lavie (City Park) slavie@cbs-no.org for guidance.  Lastly, please continue to pray for those who are sick, for their quick recovery, and for the safety of all in our community and around the world.

Live Jesus in our Hearts,
