SCHOOL NEWS

Several orientations are scheduled over the next two weeks for interested students and parents.

The first is the Academic Games orientation on Monday at 3:30 in Room 7L.  Meet with Bro. Laurence

to learn more about this popular club.  Cross Country begins on Monday afternoon with practice from

3:25-4:25.  Interested students should see Mr. Rucker to sign up for Cross Country.  The Chess Club orientation

is Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 in the cafeteria.  Mr. RJ Tagorda will again serve as the moderator of the Chess Club

for this school year.  The next orientation is for the Swimming Team and Club.  This meeting will be held on

Wednesday at 12:05.  Students will be excused from ”first” recess to attend the meeting.  Students having “first”

lunch should attend the meeting at 12:05 then eat during “second” lunch.  On Wednesday afternoon, those

interested in the Instrumental Band program at CBS should plan to meet with Mr. Duncan Pray, moderator for

the band this school year.  A registration form to participate in the band is being sent home with students along

with this newsletter.  Our LYO, Lasallian Youth Organization, is the school’s service club and will meet for the

first time on Friday morning at 7:30 in the gym.  LYO has more members than any other club at CBS.

Complimentary donuts and milk will be served to participants this Friday.  Come learn about our service and

club and grab some free breakfast at the same time!  The Kayak Club is an enjoyable extracurricular activity

that students can share with their parents.  Interested families should plan to meet with Mr. Moreau on

Wednesday, September 1st at 6:00 in the cafeteria to learn more about the Kayak Club.  Finally, the tackle

football teams begin their seasons with scrimmages on Falcon Field this Saturday.

The Christian Brothers Foundation is the sponsor of two more beginning-of-the-year events for parents.

New dads are invited to a dinner on Thursday, August 26th.  Cocktails will be served at 6:00 with dinner

being served at about 6:30.  Several members of the Foundation and CBS faculty will be on hand.  Moms

will get their turn on Thursday, September 2nd at 1:00 when the Foundation will sponsor a Coffee in the parlor

and dining room.  Unlike the Dads Dinner, the Coffee is open to all moms of CBS.  At the Coffee, moms will learn

about ways that they might get involved as a volunteer around CBS.  Both the Dads Dinner and the Moms Coffee

are excellent opportunities to meet others who are new to CBS and to hear from those who have been around a while.

Hopefully, you will be able to join us.

As noted at the parent orientation meetings last week, all adults who volunteer at CBS and have or will have regular

contact with the students must submit to a background screening and participate in an archdiocesan-sponsored child

protection workshop.  The Safe Environment Workshop will be held at CBS this Wednesday, August 25th from

6:30-8:00.  All parents are invited to attend.  Participants will receive a certificate verifying attendance at the workshop.

Parents who cannot or do not attend this workshop will be still be eligible to volunteer at CBS but will be required to

attend this same workshop at another time and location in the archdiocese.

Our first school Mass is Tuesday, August 24th.  The sponsor for the Mass is Homeroom 7R.  While I would love to invite

all parents to attend all school Masses, the size of our gym won’t permit a general invitation.  (Of course, that will

change once the new building is finished!)  Meanwhile, only the parents of the sponsoring homeroom are invited to

attend the school Masses.  Thanks for your understanding.

In previous years, parents expressed an interest in participating in a weekly Rosary in the CBS Chapel for the intentions

of the CBS community and the personal intentions of those who participate.  Therefore, we will open the chapel on

Friday mornings at 8:00 for a weekly praying of the rosary.  Parents who are interested in praying the rosary should report

directly to the chapel.  At 8:00, parents will participate in the daily prayer of the morning announcements for the school

community.  Immediately after the announcements are over, the rosary will begin.  We expect that the rosary will be

completed between 8:20 and 8:25.  No pre-registration or sign-up of any kind is necessary.  If your schedule happens to

permit your participation on a Friday morning, just show up.  We would love to have you!

The first Saturday detention of the school year is this Saturday.  All Saturday detentions are scheduled from 9:00-11:00

on the specified Saturday mornings.  If your son has a detention which conflicts with a CBS extracurricular activity, he

must serve the detention.  If your son has a detention which presents a conflict within your family, please write a note to

me requesting a date change.  His detention will be postponed until the next scheduled Saturday detention (see annual calendar).

A detention will not be postponed twice.  Please consider this policy before requesting a date change.

Next Friday, September 3rd is the first Friday of the month.  Accordingly, dismissal will be at 1:45 so that the faculty may

attend its monthly faculty meeting.  Supervision will be provided until 2:10.  Thereafter, all students remaining on campus

will be directed to the After Care program.  After Care will remain open until 5:30 that day – just like any other day – for those

who may need the service.

Friendly Reminder … Many forms and fees associated with the beginning of a new school year were due this past

Friday, August 20th.  If you have any outstanding forms or fees, we ask that you attend to them immediately.  Your

cooperation shall be most appreciated.  Similarly, new families who have not yet activated both Edline accounts

(student and parent) are asked to do so immediately.  Thanks.

Finally, your cooperation with the alternate traffic plan for drop-off and pick up is and has been most appreciated.

I ask for your continued patience.  The contractor tells me that he may be able to open the road near the end of next week.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed.  By the way, I have seen the City Park Police on park roads using the radar guns and

pulling cars over.  Watch your speed!

Sincerely,
